International News: Day 3 of the 2025 World Games… Semifinals Set with Japan vs. USA & Chinese Taipei vs. Canada (August 15, 2025)

International News: Day 3 of the 2025 World Games… Semifinals Set with Japan vs. USA & Chinese Taipei vs. Canada (August 15, 2025)

With the Opening Round of  The World Games 2025 Women’s Softball competition complete, only four teams remain in contention for the gold medal.

On Saturday, Group A winners and defending champions USA will face their longtime rivals and world No. 1 Japan, who finished second in Group B; while Group B top-seeds Canada will meet Chinese Taipei, the second-place team in Group A.

Both semifinals are scheduled for noon local time in Chengdu, China.

In Group A, No. 2 USA finished undefeated in first place, while No. 5 Chinese Taipei (2-1) finished second. No. 6 the Netherlands (1-2) finished third with China in fourth place.

In Group B, No. 4 Canada clinched first place with Friday’s win, leaving world champions Japan second. Out of medal contention, No. 8 Australia defeated No. 3 Puerto Rico and will play the Placement Round as the third and fourth placed teams respectively.

The Placement Round will be completed on Saturday. At 9 a.m., China will face Australia and Puerto Rico will play the Netherlands. The winners of these games will play for the fifth place, while the losers will compete for the seventh place. Both games are scheduled at 3 p.m.

Canada 2, Japan 1

Morgan Reimer pitched a gem and Grace Messmer drove in both runs to lift Canada over Japan, 2-1, clinching first place in Group A.

Reimer allowed one run on one hit, with one walk and two strikeouts over 5.1 innings to earn the win. Morgan Rackel closed out the game, recording the final five outs and giving up two hits.

Messmer put Canada on the board in the second inning with a line-drive shot to left field, then added another RBI in the third with a bases-loaded walk.

Japan’s lone run came in the sixth inning when Minori Naito delivered an infield single. Miu Goto was charged with the loss after working five innings.

Chinese Taipei 2, Netherlands 0

Play by Play and Box Score

A two-run homer by Chinese Taipei catcher Li Szu-Shih in the bottom of the first inning was all the pitching staff needed to secure a 2-0 win over the Netherlands in a decisive game for second place in Group B.

Ke Hsia-Ai and Tu Ya-Ting combined for the shutout in the win-or-go-home contest. Ke pitched two innings, allowing two hits, while Tu worked five innings of two-hit ball with a walk and a strikeout to earn the win.

In the opening frame, Lin Feng-Chen bunted for a single, and Li followed with a drive to center field for the decisive two-run shot.

Lisa Hop (5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 SO) was charged with the loss.

USA 8, China 1

Play by Play and Box Score

Skylar Wallace hit a grand slam and Jessie Warren delivered a walk-off two-run homer to give USA an 8-1 win over China in six innings, finishing Group A undefeated.

China struck first in the top of the first with a sacrifice fly from slugger Min Ren, but couldn’t hold the lead. USA tied it in the third on a sac fly by Hannah Flippen, then took control in the fifth when Wallace launched her grand slam.

In the sixth, Tiare Jennings singled in Bubba Nickles, and Warren ended the game with a homer off the centre-field board.

Veteran Ally Carda earned the win with one inning of relief. Lefty Kelly Maxwell worked four innings, striking out five while allowing four hits and one run. For China, Yuchen Wei was charged with the loss.

Australia 9, Puerto Rico 1

Play by Play and Box Score

Catcher Shaylan Whatman hit a two-run homer and scored twice to lead Australia’s 12-hit offence in a 9-1, five-inning win over Puerto Rico.

Kandra Lamb and Jayme Reddacliff combined in the circle, allowing four hits and one unearned run while striking out three.

Aleshia Ocasio was charged with the loss after four innings, giving up four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.
