Team Spotlight: Atlanta Vipers 2030… Led by Coach Selena Collins-Patterson, a Texas A&M Hall of Fame Player, This 13U Team Is One to Watch (January 8, 2026)

Atlanta Vipers Head Coach Selena Collins-Patterson addresses her championship-winning 13U team.

Selena Collins-Patterson is the chairman of Atlanta Vipers Fastpitch Inc. and is also the head coach of the Vipers 13U – Patterson team based in Georgia.

Her impressively accomplished softball background is rooted in competing and coaching at the highest levels of the game. The Arizona native played collegiate softball at Texas A&M and is a 2021 Aggie Hall of Fame inductee.

Here’s a video the university produced for her Hall of Fame induction:

Following her collegiate career, Collins-Patterson played professionally in the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) league with the Texas Thunder and later the Chicago Bandits.

Internationally, she represented the USA playing on the National Team from 2001–2003, competing against the best players in the world.

After her playing career ended, Collins-Patterson transitioned into collegiate coaching and eventually, after starting a family, chose to step away from full-time coaching and pursue a career in higher education.

The former college and pro athlete has been a professor at Kennesaw State University since 2014, continuing to mentor young adults academically. Last fall, she returned to the field as the Head Softball Coach at Kennesaw State University.

The versatile athlete and coach is also making a difference with promising young softball players just starting their promising fastpitch careers.

Collins-Patterson’s talented squad of all 2030 players save one 2031 standout has consistently been one of the Top 3 teams in the Southeast and has competed at a national level, earning wins against multiple top-ranked programs.

The numbers speak for themselves: last fall, the young Vipers finished with a 14–2 record while playing in the strongest tournaments available, including a runner-up finish in the Thunderbolts Showcase.

Over the last two years, here are some of the top finishes by the Vipers 13U – Collins-Patterson team:

  • Spring 2024: 2nd at PGF TN Mojo Invitational
  • Fall 2024: 1st at the USSSA 14U A CHOA; 2nd at PGF Super Select Southern Fall
  • Spring 2025: 1st at PGF Super Select 12U Championship; T-15 at TCS SE Nationals
  • Fall 2025: 1st at Alliance Qualifier, 5-0 record at Veteran’s Showcase; 2nd at PGF Super Select Bolts Showcase
Current Vipers 13U player Reese McFadden waits for the play at first.

In one impressive stretch—between the Fall of ’24 and the Spring of 2025—the team posted a combined 57-22-1 record highlighted by capturing the PGF Super Select title.

The core of this team has been together since 2022 and, according to Coach Collins-Patterson:

“This team was intentionally created to develop a nationally respected program while preparing athletes to pursue their dreams of playing softball at the collegiate level.”

The championship-winning coach says the goal of the club organization is to help their athletes grow while playing the best competition available.

“Throughout our time together,” she explains of her time with her players, “we have focused on true player development, teaching athletes what it means to compete at a high level, training them mentally to maintain composure, and instilling grit and toughness in every situation.”

“One of the greatest strengths of this group is their discipline in how they play the game. Their fire, IQ and no-quit attitude set them apart. They play for one another, gel naturally as a unit, and compete like sisters, fully understanding what it means to win and lose together.”

Harper Reeves records the out in the infield.

The primary focus of the team, the coach stresses, is preparation for what comes next.

“We emphasize mental and physical resilience, teach athletes how to navigate failure, and hold every player to a high standard of accountability and discipline when they fall below it,” Coach Collins-Patterson continues.

“Our athletes learn that in order to achieve their dreams, they must look the part, act the part, and live the part, but also understand that this game is meant to be played with passion, and it’s supposed to be fun!”

“They understand when to be silly and when to lock in, which is my favorite part about them. They like to laugh, be silly, Tik Tok… all the things’ teenagers do, but they know when we need to be on business which is something that I am proud of. “

Giuliana Patterson waits for the pitch.

A defining moment for the Vipers 13U squad came during the 12U PGF Super Select Championship, where the team played seven back-to-back games to win the championship.

“That run tested the grit, passion, and will-to win in a way I have rarely witnessed,” the Vipers coach remembers.

“That experience elevated their expectations and fundamentally changed how they carry themselves, they have competed with an elite mindset ever since. I do not ever want to have to do that again (play seven games in a row), that is for sure!”

“That many games in a day is ridiculous and I did not like that they had to be run through the gauntlet like that. Hopefully, that will not ever happen again!” she laughs.

Here are some highlights of that test of endurance for the team:

Collins-Patterson praises her Vipers assistant coach, India Davis—who played collegiate softball at Georgia Southern University—as “an exceptional addition to the staff. Her knowledge, energy, and ability to connect with athletes have been instrumental in helping lead and develop this team.”

Rayelee Johnson in the circle.

With all her impressive accomplishments at every level of the game, what still motivates the Hall of Famer is being able to each and develop the next generation of fastpitch talent.

“I am extremely excited about the future of our players,” Collins-Patterson says. “Entering the recruiting process can be overwhelming, especially for parents who are unfamiliar with how collegiate recruiting works, which is the case for the majority of families.”

“One of my primary goals as a coach is to guide both athletes and parents through this journey with clarity, honesty, and confidence.”

“Building trust is at the center of everything we do. From development and exposure to communication and expectations, our program is committed to ensuring families feel confident and reassured that their daughters are in excellent hands.”

“We prepare our athletes not only to reach the next level, but to navigate the recruiting process with confidence and understanding.”
