Oklahoma-committed 2028 RHP/UT Sophia Schlader, No. 2 in the 2028 Line Drive HOT 100, recently talked to Line Drive Media about Beverly Bandits Premier – Conroy, Waukee Northwest High (Iowa), the Iowa Gatorade State Player of the Year Award, Sept. 1st and recruiting journey and committing to Oklahoma.

RECRUITING SPOTLIGHT Q&A

Line Drive Media: Can you tell us about your Sept. 1st and recruiting journey?
Sophia Schlader: September 1 is a day that I will always remember.

I received calls, text and emails from schools and I’m super blessed to have received those.

Some texts contained information about the school, others where to set up a Zoom call. Most of my calls on September 1st were FaceTimes or Zoom meetings!

I also received some special mail from colleges as well.

LDM: What did the coaches say or ask you when you talked to them?
SS: The main questions the coaches asked were:

  • what school was my No. 1?
  • what I want out of a program?
    what my end goals where?
  • what I want to accomplish during my college career?
  • if I was going on other visits?

LDM: Conversely, what did you ask them?
SS: The main questions I asked were:

  • how many other pitchers are you recruiting?
  • how will I be developed in your program?
  • would I have the opportunity to hit and pitch?

LDM: So what factors went into your decision?
SS: I wanted to play somewhere where I could become the best version of myself on and off the field.

I want to be the best and I want to be surrounded by the best, so (I was) looking for a program with players that have a similar mindset and values as me was a large factor.

I was also looking for a faith-based program that will help me grow on my faith journey as well and use softball to share God’s word.

LDM: It sounds like OU was a fit in all the key areas that were important to you…
SS: Oklahoma feels like home. I loved everything about it: the community, the coaches and the players, who are going to push me to be the best.
