Texas state champion Melissa officially finished No. 1 in the NFCA Spring High School Top 25 Coaches Poll, the Association announced on Thursday.
The (38-1) Cardinals were the top team in 15 of the 16 NFCA rankings this season and captured the 5A, Division 1 crown with a 4-2 victory over Barbers Hill on May 30.
Melissa avenged its only loss — a 2-0 defeat to Lake Belton on May 14 — with two straight triumphs over the Broncos to claim their best-of-three regional final series, then rolled past Aledo, 15-4, in a May 24 state semifinal and the aforementioned Eagles in the final.
Fellow state champions Calvary Baptist Academy (Louisiana Division III Select), Lake Creek (Texas 5A, Division 2) and Bishop O’Connell (Virginia Division I) finished second through fourth, while Texas 6A, Division 1 regional semifinalist Katy rounds out the top five.
