Hang on, folks…. winter is almost over, and spring is in sight!

*** Seriously, though, our hearts and prayers go out to those on the East Coast who’ve been hit by devasting storms and flooding, especially in Kentucky right now.

High school softball has returned and so we kick off our annual series of honoring the players who get it done on the field.

Each Tuesday for the next several months we’ll honor top performances across the country; if you or someone you know would like to have a player considered, scroll down to see how to send in a nomination.

Normally, the Line Drive High School Player of the Week will be just that—one athlete—but two teammates share this week’s honor as both put up video game-like numbers… on the same team.

Melissa (Texas) High teammates Hutton “Lulu” Adrian and Finlee “Fin” Williams put on a hitting clinic at the plate last week and—over the course of just five games—these two high-caliber athletes showcased why they are nationally recognized talents

Combining the stats for of the duo, they had 20 hits, 25 runs, and 25 RBIs.

As one Texas coach commented on their stats: “This is ridiculous stuff.”

Lulu Adrian

What, we asked Lulu today, was the secret to her tremendous hitting display?

“At the plate,” she responded, “my focus was on catching the ball out front and attacking it hard whenever I decided to swing. I really worked on my discipline, making sure I was waiting for my pitch and not chasing anything out of the zone.”

Adrian, a 5-foot-10 sophomore catcher and corner infielder, already has a Texas 5A state title on her resume as well as being All-State and All-American. She hit a stellar .769 (10-for-13) and, herself, hit seven home runs in the 13 plate appearances driving in 11 RBIs

For the weeks’ worth of work, Lulu had a .813 on-base percentage, a 2.385 slugging percentage and a 3.197 OPS.

Her mother, Brandy Adrian, was understandably proud of Lulu’s play as well as the unity and success of the entire Cardinals softball team.

“I thought the girls did an amazing job this weekend,” Mom added. “It was a great start to the season and we’re super proud!

Fin Williams

Not to be outdone, Fin, another Melissa High sophomore, put up numbers very similar to those of her teammate as she batted .769 (she, like Lulu, hit 10-for-13) with five homers, 14 RBIs and had an .813 on-base percentage, a .813 on-base percentage, a 2.154 slugging percentage and a 2.966 OPS.

The infielder/outfielder was also All-State at the Class 6A level last year and has earned multiple Offensive Player of the Tournament honors.

Finlee believes her own 10-for-13 hitting spree was due to a combination of factors.

“At the plate, I just felt locked in,’ she begins. “I kept my mind clear, stayed patient, and focused on hunting good pitches. I wasn’t trying to do too much—just seeing the ball well and trusting my swing.”

“When I got my pitch, I attacked it and found barrels. It all came down to sticking to my approach, staying aggressive but disciplined, and letting my work show.”

Here’s a look at home runs hit by the two players:

It’s unlikely that Lulu will continue to hit seven home runs a week or Finlee five——but one thing that you can expect is the Texan to keep doing what it takes to shine, on and off the fields.

“Hitting seven home runs was an incredible feeling,” Lulu adds, “and not just for me but for my team. We always talk about how home runs are game-changers, and this weekend, mine and my teammates’ homers made a huge impact. I’m so proud of all of us for putting in the work during the offseason and coming out strong to start the season.”

Fin agreed that it’s all about the team’s success despite her and Lulu’s amazing week.

“It felt amazing, not just for me but for the whole team,” she begins. “We always talk about how momentum is everything, and this weekend, we fed off each other’s energy. Every big hit, every home run—it wasn’t just about one person, it was about all of us working together and pushing each other.”

“Seeing my teammates step up and have big moments made it even more special,” Finc concludes. “We’ve put in so much work in the offseason, and to come out and perform like that as a team was an incredible feeling.”
