Behind a dominant showing from both sides of the ball the U.S. Women’s National Team (WNT) picked up its third win — and second-straight shutout — of the 2024 World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) World Cup Finals with a 6-0 shutout victory Tuesday over China to close out Opening Round in Castions Di Strada, Italy.
Three Eagles posted a multi-hit performance in the win including Jocelyn Alo (2-for-4) Maya Brady (2-for-3) and Sahvanna Jaquish (2-for-2).
Ally Carda got the start in the circle for the Eagles fanning four batters through four
innings before Rachel Garcia stepped in to record five K’s through the final three innings. The duo combined for nine strikeouts on the day and only one hit allowed while not allowing a single run.
The Eagles will advance to the Super Round as the No. 1 seed in Group A following yesterday’s win.
Team USA wasted no time getting on the board, plating two runs in the top of the first thanks to a series of walks and a pair of singles from Jocelyn Alo and Sahvanna Jaquish that put the Eagles ahead, 2-0.
Alo and Jaquish kept the momentum going in the top of the second, each recording their second hit of the day in back-to-back at-bats to score two more — widening the U.S. lead to 4-0.
Sis Bates and Maya Brady tacked on one more in the top of the third after a walk to Bates set the stage for Brady to send a line drive double to center field, strengthening the lead, 5-0. Brady pushed the final U.S. run across in the top of the seventh after a series of singles paved the way for a base hit up the middle to put the U.S. on top, 6-0.
After entering the game in the fourth inning, Garcia held strong in the circle through the final at-bat, retiring three straight batters via strikeout in the bottom of the seventh to seal the shutout victory for Team USA.
Team USA put on a strong performance throughout Opening Round of the 2024 WBSC World Cup Finals with a .333 team batting average and a combined 24 hits, while outscoring its opponents 18-2.
Leading the U.S. at the plate are Brady and Jessie Warren with .500 batting averages, with Warren being the only Eagle to tab a home run through three matchups.
The U.S. pitching staff of Carda, Faraimo, Garcia and Maxwell remains dominant throughout the Opening Round with two-straight shutouts and a combined 27 strikeouts.
The Eagles return to action today (Thursday, July 18, Time TBD) against No. 3 Japan to kick off the Super Round, with the Medal Round to follow July 20.
