*****
Today was a big game against Puerto Rico and our team came out strong. I started the day with some much-needed rest, breakfast and a little homework before getting focused for the matchup.
The day started early, waking up at 7:30 am to prepare for one of the biggest games yet. After breakfast, I made sure my game-day hair was ready. I relaxed watching a movie and did some stretching before heading to the field, focused and locked in for what we knew would be a battle against Puerto Rico.
Leona Eichholz got the start in the circle and set the tone with three strong innings, racking up six strikeouts. As the game remained tight, I got the call in the top of the 4th inning to come in for relief. Stepping into the circle, I knew I had my defense behind me, and that gave me the confidence to do my job. I pitched four innings, allowing four hits while striking out four — a 4-4-4 performance.
In the bottom of the 6th, we needed a spark .. and we got it. Ashleigh Bronowicz led off with a clutch hit up the middle and Skyla Saito brought her home to tie the game. Then Melody Soto came through with the game-winning RBI, sealing our spot in the gold medal game. After the game, Skyla and I were asked to do a camera interview. That is always fun! The team was rewarded with some ice cream before we loaded on the bus. It has been extremely hot here in Mexico, so the ice cream was a nice refreshing treat!
After the game, I couldn’t help but reflect on my 4-4-4 performance —something about it felt special. They say when you see 444, it’s a sign from your guardian angel, letting you know you’re right where you’re supposed to be, suggesting that you are on the right path and that your efforts are being supported. And in that game, I felt a calmness and I knew I was exactly where I was meant to be. I felt confident that my teammates would push across the runs to win the ball game.
On the bus ride back to the hotel, I was honored to receive the team MVP for the game, a special moment for me as I received the game lineup from Coach Kyla (Holas). Coach Kyla is great. She has challenged me and guided me through these games. I will be a much better pitcher because of this experience!
To unwind after the game, we turned in our laundry, had dinner and then headed to the beach for some fun. We threw a ball around, did some decompressing stretches in the pool and even played a little volleyball with some teammates. It was a perfect way to relax and enjoy the moment.
We have secured our spot in the gold-medal game, but first we play Canada (on) Thursday in a super-round game at 3:30 p.m. Central Time. It’s another big step toward the gold medal and I’m ready to bring everything to the field!
Let’s WIN two more, USA!
