International News: Japan Stays No. 1 in Women’s Softball World Ranking Even After Team USA Wins The World Games 2025 (August 26, 2025)

The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC), the international governing body for baseball and softball, announced today the results of its updated World Rankings.

In somewhat of a surprise, Team USA didn’t take over the top spot even after winning the recently completed The World Games.

In today’s release of the Women’s Softball World Rankings, Japan remains in first place with 3,072 points ahead of USA with 2,778 and Puerto Rico with 2,624. Canada (2528) and Chinese Taipei (1927) round out the Top 5.

China, the silver medalists and hosts of The World Games 2025, made the biggest progress, moving up three places to seventh with 1,513 points.

Under the new ranking calculation system, the WBSC Women’s Softball World Ranking sees the expiration of the points earned at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which had remained in the standings for four calendar years. In that event, Japan beat the USA 2-0 to win Gold.

In addition, the points from The World Games 2025 replace those from the 2022 edition of the event, held at Hoover Met Stadium in Birmingham, Alabama, which saw Team USA defeat Japan 3-2 in the Gold medal game.

The updated world rankings as compiled by the WBSC.

Japan also was announced at No. 1 on the men’s side.

In The World Games 2025 men’s competition, also played in Chengdu, China, Japan and the USA shared the gold medal after the finals were rained out.

Canada and Venezuela both received bronze, with Argentina fifth, Czechia sixth, Australia seventh and Singapore eighth on the men’s side.
