There is not a new No. 1 team atop this week’s Line Drive Media SUPER 70 National High School Rankings after two straight weeks of change, but top-ranked South Warren of Bowling Green, Ky., could have possibly been toppled with a game played last week against the No. 1 team from Tennessee.
The visitors from Green Hill (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) came in with just one loss on the season in its own right and took a 2-0 lead, but fell behind, 3-2, on a three-run homer by South Warren’s Kalie Kuzma.
The Spartans eventually led 5-2 on the 20th homer of the season by McLaine Hudson, this week’s Line Drive Media’s National High School Player of the Week.
They had to hold on to a 5-4 win as Green Hill mounted a rally in the top of the seventh and had two runners on base when the final out was recorded on a tapper to pitcher Courtney Norwood.
This week’s rankings were delayed a bit on Wednesday as we were thinking about South Warren having to play Kentucky No. 2 ranked Daviess County High on the road. The game was cancelled, however, due to too much rain.
Those two teams could still face each other in the Kentucky High School Athletic Association state tournament.

Speaking of state championships, the road to the state finals in Texas has begun and it’s important to note which nationally ranked teams are in which divisions.
Since Lake Creek, Barbers Hill and Melissa are all in 5A, that means the rankings involving those three teams will get decided on the field.
The top-ranked teams in 6A are Kingwood, Waco Midway, Guyer and Katy.
Texas still determines its divisions with an enrollment component so in some years it can be a problem if the 5A and 6A state champions haven’t played each other. The 5A state champion this year will be the one to watch for the highest final national ranking.
It’s also important to always remind everyone that it is possible for a Texas team to lose a game in a best-of-three series and still be moving on to the next round of the playoffs.
In some cases, a loss is a loss, and it can cost rankings spots. It depends on how highly ranked each opponent is in each team’s bracket.

This week’s highest-ranking newcomer is Barrington of Barrington, Ill. The Fillies added five wins to their record last week and have piled it on up to 23-0 after a Tuesday win this week over Conant.
Head coach Perry Peterson’s program has made it a habit of winning 30 games each season, including 35 last year when the Fillies went to the Class 4A state championship only to fall short, 4-1, to Oswego.
Barrington also has won 30 games or more in 2023, 2022, 2021, 2019, 2018 and 2017.
