NorCal Rising-Walling/Kyne and California Grapettes Gold both reached the final, decided not to play the championship game and share the 18U title at the Phil Mumma Memorial Tournament on Sunday at Foskett Park.

“It’s nice to see the girls come together,” NorCal Rising coach Jay Kyne said. “This was our second tournament as a new team after adding eight new players to our team. We brought together a ton of strong individuals and this weekend we saw them work together as a team, outscoring the opposition, 36-7. We are looking forward to heading down South in a few weeks at the Fireworks Sparkler NIT.”
NorCal Rising defeated San Jose Sting-Butler/Vasquez, 9-0, Foothill Gold-Stinson/Watson, 3-0, USA Premier National-Zepeda, 10-2, and DNP’d California Grapettes Gold in bracket games.

“I’m happy about the direction that we’re heading, given that this was thought to possibly be a rebuilding year,” California Grapettes Gold coach Bryan Merrida said. “Fortunately, we have a group of players, who haven’t bought into the whole rebuilding thing and just want to be challenged. After Salinas and now after the Phil Mumma, we can see what our potential is and we’re excited about it.
“We got strong contributions from our entire roster all weekend. It’s great to see the internal competition that has been established and also embraced. Pitchers (2027) Ava Avila and (2026) Kaylee Sanchez did a very nice job in the circle and were backed up by catchers, (2026) Mathilda James and (2027) Emma Hernandez. Offensively, we competed well, as we showed our speed and power. Overall, it was a rewarding weekend that was only tempered by not being able to play the championship game. A big thank you to 1st to 3rd for hosting the annual Phil Mumma Tournament.”
