Event News: Saturday Action at PGF Ultimate Challenge in Salinas, CA (Nov. 2, 2024)
The middle day of the three-day PGF Ultimate Challenge in Salinas, Calif. saw the first games start at 8 am, the final ones at 8 pm and many in-between that featured a lot outstanding play, players and teams.
College coaches were in attendance, primarily from inside the Golden State including Stanford, Cal, UC San Diego, St. Mary’s and many more, but also programs as far away as Pitt from the ACC.
Today also saw the action on the field transition from pool play to bracket play that will culminate in Sunday finals at the Salinas Sports Complex for the 18U, 16U and 14U age divisions.
Kudos to the following teams who went undefeated in pool action:
- 18U: CA Grapettes – Merrida (2-0-1, Pool B); Cal Nuggets – Woods (3-0, Pool C)
- 16U: LTG Lions – Carda (3-0, Pool B); Sunsets – Jiminez (3-0, Pool C)
- 14U: Lady Magic – Munoz/Asia (3-0, Pool A); Warrior Academy – McDonald (2-0-1, Pool B)

I will give more insights in the following days but for now, will share some “visuals” of the day and will say this about two pitchers I’ll profile in the near future:
- 2025 grad Maddie Millhorn showed Saturday night why she is Oregon-bound and considered one of the top pitchers in the senior class: she gave up just two hits and had seven K’s in five innings in her NW Bullets – Campos team’s 7-0 blanking of Firecrackers Premier RTY 18U. Her change-up was masterful in the team’s first bracket game.
- Another pitcher of note today was 2026 grad Katia Nesper on the Extreme Diamond Sports 16U – Rio team. How’s this for pressure: she’s about to commit soon between Stanford and Northwestern (she has a 4.31 GPA) and Cardinal Head Coach Jessica Allistair was there watching the team as were more than a half dozen other coaches. In an impressive pitching win over a strong Lady Magic 16U team, Katia had 12 strikeouts, gave up four hits and just one walk in the complete game victory.
