Today (June 6, 2024) kicked off the PGF Show Me the Money tournament in Newberry, Fla. with the 18U and 16U divisions playing at the 16 field Champion’s complex and the 14Us playing at Easton Field about a mile away from the main site
Note: the 14Us move to Champion’s Field on Saturday so all action will be at the one site.
The event features 120 teams in a newly instituted format with two pool games on Thursday followed by a double elimination bracket Friday through Saturday.
The championship games on Sunday will be played at the Univ. of Florida’s Katie Seashole Pressly Softball Stadium in Gainesville—20 miles from Champion’s Field.
For those teams that don’t advance to Sunday play, there will be two showcase games on Sunday to get more college coach exposure, which—when the college season is officially over between Texas and Oklahoma—the college coaches will descend upon Show Me the Money in droves.
And be sure to say “hi” to Brentt and Shannon from Line Drive Softball (if you need help with the tourney app, be sure to grab one of us for help!)
Back to this tremendous tourney: the winning team in each of the three age divisions will win a $10,000 cash prize and the runners-up receiving $2,500… thus the title “Show Me the Money.”
And the PGF name attachment is because Event Director Jason Guseaff is the PGF Regional Director for the Northeast and Southeast as well being the owner of Softball Kingdom, an event production company.
I grabbed Jason – whose birthday is TODAY, so if you know him, wish him a Happy Birthday!—for a quick interview as the day kicked off… here’s what he had to say:
A sure-to-be popular feature to this year’s event: the Capital Tacos truck featuring “true Tex-Mex tacos.” The owner, Bill Hoopes, is also the State Director for Florida PGF and has an amazing story on and off the fields I hope to spotlight soon.
And, in a totally unrelated matter but another example of why softball is SO great, check out this final play in the Texas 6A state championship where Weslaco came from behind (8 runs!!!) to win on a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 7th inning.
Wow!!!
Waco Midway had a 9-3 lead with 1 out in the 7th inning of the 6A #UILState Championship. Weslaco storms back and wins it as Andrea Ortiz hits a walk off grand slam to send everyone home. 8 run 7th inning. Absolutely incredible. pic.twitter.com/OTJzPGdsuI
