Tennessee holds on to No. 1 despite first loss of the season

3/17/26 (Week 6)

Despite dropping its first game of the season, Tennessee held on to the No. 1 ranking in this week’s . The Lady Vols (26-1) had their perfect start to the season (25 games) snapped in game two at new-No. 11 Mississippi State, but bounced back to win the series in Starkville.

UT received 23 first-place votes, followed by new-No. 2 Texas with seven and No. 17 Grand Canyon, the last undefeated team in NCAA Division I and Division II, garnering one first-place vote. The Lopes (30-0) are also the first NCAA team to hit 30 wins in 2026. No. 4 Alabama, which entered last week undefeated, also suffered its first defeat, a game-two setback to previous-No. 8 Arkansas.

In three close ballgames, the Lady Vols opened with a 3-1 victory in nine innings. The Bulldogs (27-4) responded with a 1-0 shutout in game two before Tennessee captured the series with a 4-1 triumph.

A red-hot Longhorn squad leapfrogged Texas Tech for the No. 2 spot. Texas (26-1) extended its 24-game winning streak last week, collecting four more wins at home, including three over RV Ole Miss in SEC action. After a 3-1 triumph, the Longhorns closed out the series sweep with two convincing run-rule victories.

The third-ranked Red Raiders saw their 14-game win streak snapped in their Big 12 opener against No. 13 Arizona. Texas Tech responded to its run-rule loss to the Wildcats (21-7) with two run-rule victories to take the series.

The Crimson Tide (26-1), who had their 25-game undefeated start to the season snapped by the Razorbacks (23-4), sandwiched a pair of 4-1 wins around the game-two loss to capture the series.

No.6 Oklahoma (28-2), No. 7 UCLA (25-3), No. 8 Florida State (25-4) and No. 9 Nebraska (21-5) all got through their weeks unscathed, extending their winning streaks to 17, 19, 14 and 10 games, respectively.

Arizona State (22-7) made a significant move to No. 20 following its series win over then-No. 21 Oklahoma State.

Stetson’s Edmiaston, Belmont’s Johnson collect 2026 Louisville Slugger/Wilson DI weekly honors

Stetson’s Nicole Edmiaston and Belmont’s Maya Johnson were named Division I Louisville Slugger/NFCA Player and Wilson/NFCA Pitcher of the Week for contests played March 9-15. Johnson is the first Division I student-athlete to earn the honor four times in one season.

Edmiaston was 9-for-13 at the plate (.692) with three doubles, three home runs, 11 RBI and seven runs scored. She slugged 1.615 and reached base at a .714 clip. The junior keyed the Hatters to a three-game ASUN conference sweep of RV North Florida as she was only retired twice on the weekend, finishing the series 9-for-11 (.818) with a 1.909 slugging percentage and a 2.742 OPS. Edmiaston collected three hits with a double and home run in each contest against the Ospreys. In games one and three, she scored three times in each contest and drove in four and five runs, respectively.

Johnson continued her stellar season with two more complete-game shutouts last weekend in a Missouri Valley Conference sweep of Evansville. Over 14 innings of work, the graduate hurler struck out 35 Aces, walked four, surrendered four hits and held the opposition to a .087 batting average. Johnson fanned a career-high 19 batters in a series-opening one-hit shutout and sat down 16 more in the series finale to secure the sweep. She brought her NCAA-best strikeout total to 178.

The awards are voted on by the NFCA Division I Top 25 Poll Committee, which features one member coach from each of the NCAA’s 31 conferences.

West Texas A&M takes over top spot in 2026 NFCA/GoRout DII Top 25 Coaches Poll

Riding a 12-game win streak, West Texas A&M takes over the top spot in this week’s NFCA/GoRout Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll. The Lady Buffs (25-3) grabbed hold of the pole position unanimously after the previous No. 1 team, Cal State San Marcos, split a California Collegiate Athletic Association series with Chico State.

WT is back at No. 1 a position it held for three weeks in 2025 and five weeks in 2024. The Lady Buffs posted four big Lone Star Conference wins last week at home, outscoring St. Edward’s and St. Mary’s by a combined score of 41-3.

San Marcos slipped to No. 2 following its split with Chico State. The Cougars (24-3) split both doubleheaders winning game two and three of the series with the Wildcats.

Missouri Southern has now won eight straight and leapfrogged an idle Cal State East Bay for No. 3. The Lions (25) knocked off St. Cloud State and Sioux Falls in a pair of twinbills during the MIAA/NSIC Crossover in Joplin, Mo.

No. 5 North Georgia (23-4), No. 6 AUM (22-4) and No. 7 Southern Arkansas (26-2) remained in their spots for another week with Saint Leo moving into the No. 8 position and UIndy cracking the top-10 at No. 9. The eighth-ranked Lions ran their win streak to 17 games, while the seventh-ranked Muleriders and ninth-ranked Greyhounds have each won 12 straight.

Pitt State (26-1) and McKendree (23-5) made the biggest moves inside the rankings, elevating five spots to No. 11 and 16, respectively, while Lenoir Rhyne (17-5) returned to the top 25 at No. 15. Also coming back into the fold is No. 25 East Stroudsburg (12-6).

Then-No. 18 Rogers State (17-9) and then-No. 22 Florida Tech (19-6-1) dropped out of the rankings.

NFCA Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll

Virginia Wesleyan keeps rolling atop NFCA/GoRout Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll

Unbeaten Virginia Wesleyan kept rolling as the unanimous No. 1 team in the NFCA/GoRout Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll, the Association announced on Tuesday.

The (14-0) Marlins, who were the national runner-up to Trine last season and replaced the Thunder in the top spot in the rankings last week, added six more victories to their ledger, including half of those by run rule.

Virginia Wesleyan has a home twinbill later today against Mary Washington before opening Old Dominion Athletic Conference play with two games versus Eastern Mennonite on Saturday.

No. 2 Trine (11-1) has been idle since going 5-1 at the NFCA Division III Leadoff Classic presented by MaxBP in Columbus, Ga., but returns to action on Saturday against Anderson. The Thunder’s lone loss this season was one of two top-10 victories by Berry (also beat East Texas Baptist) at the Leadoff.

The aforementioned (13-3) Vikings are one of the other teams in an unchanged first six, staying put after a doubleheader split last Thursday with No. 9 Huntingdon. Texas Lutheran (16-2) at third, Saint Mary’s (14-2) at No. 4 and WashU (12-1-1) at No. 6 are the others.

Linfield (12-2) gained one spot to seventh after a four-game Northwest Conference series sweep of Willamette, switching spots with new No. 8 East Texas Baptist (16-3), whose only blemish on its six-game Florida trip was a 2-0 loss to Mount Union last Wednesday. Huntingdon (16-3) and Redlands (11-4) remain ninth and 10th.

Husson (13-1) broke into the Top 25 this week at 22nd following a continued stellar start. No. 20 Belhaven scored two runs in the seventh on Wednesday to deal the Eagles their first loss of the season, but Husson won its other seven contests, including shutouts of then-No. 11 Moravian and then-No. 16 Case Western Reserve.

Transylvania (12-4), which went 4-1 at its own Pioneer Classic over the weekend after a 3-3 showing at the Leadoff, is the one team in the receiving votes category. Moravian dropped out following a 3-5 week.

The NFCA/GoRout Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll is selected by 10 NCAA Division III head coaches representing the 10 NCAA regions. Current 2026 records are listed, with first-place votes in parentheses.

NFCA Division III Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week

Malen, Ewert score Wilson, Louisville Slugger Division III weekly honors

Chapman’s Rose Malen and Bowdoin’s Anika Ewert captured the latest Division III Wilson/NFCA Pitcher and Louisville Slugger/NFCA Player of the Week honors on Tuesday.

Malen, a senior pitcher from San Rafael, Calif., went 3-0 for the week and tossed her first collegiate no-hitter in an 8-0 five-inning victory over Dickinson last Monday as part of the (16-4) No. 18 Panthers’ 6-0 Hawaii trip. The right-hander followed that up with a five-hitter last Tuesday against Minnesota-Morris, then took a no-hitter into the seventh inning on Sunday in Chapman’s return to the mainland versus Pacific Lutheran, allowing just one hit in the 6-1 victory on a solo homer.

Before that, Malen had pitched 17 consecutive scoreless innings. For the week, she compiled a 0.39 ERA and held opponents to a .105 batting average.

Ewert, meanwhile, hit .636 (21-for-33) with 18 runs, two doubles, eight RBI, four walks and 17 steals in 17 attempts, as the unbeaten (9-0) Polar Bears won eight straight in Florida and nine overall to match their best start since the 2007 season. Seven of Ewert’s eight games last week featured multiple hits, runs and steals.
