Heartbreaking news to report from the college softball world as Alyson “Aly” Bermudez, the Head Coach at New College of Florida (NAIA), died last night after a year-long bout with ovarian cancer.

She was 32 years old and less than a month from turning 33.

The sad news was released via social media by Aly’s family last night:

Her school also posted the news on its softball website today.

Part of the story on the university’s page included the following:

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Alyson Bermudez, who passed away peacefully on April 27th.

Aly was the inaugural head coach of New College Softball. She was passionate, courageous, full of energy, and cared deeply for her family, friends, coaches, and athletes. She loved the game of softball and used it as a powerful tool to positively impact so many people.

We extend our condolences to the Bermudez family and the many others who were impacted by Aly’s life.

We honor her faith and her fight. Forever a deep-rooted, Mighty Banyan.

Aly had announced on April 19—just eight days before her passing—that doctors had confirmed she only “had weeks to live.”

Here’s what the coach posted on social media upon learning the medical news:

Part of her post of the sad news at that time stated:

“Unfortunately, my lungs are severely damaged by the cancer at this point. I’ve had a terrible cough for weeks that’s only gotten worse, shortness of breath, vomiting, etc. I can barely talk so please text before calling…”

“… The doctors believe I have weeks to live now. Right now, it’s unclear if I will be able to go back home. At this point I just don’t want to be alone, and I want to be comfortable and not suffer anymore.”

Aly was recognized as one of the top pitching coaches in the Southeast.Tragically, the “weeks” estimation turned out to be just one week.

Aly also gave information for a GoFundMe to, as she put it:

“… help those close to me afford flights, transport and hotels to visit me in Tampa.”

“Donations will also help my family with final arrangements and dealing with my affairs and belongings. For those of you who already have donated, I’m extremely grateful.”

Currently, Aly’s GoFundMe has raised over $40,000 and the softball community continues to donate to help.

Here are the ways funds can be sent to help Alyson’s family:

We at Line Drive Media extend our prayers, thoughts and condolences to her family, friends and those in the softball community who have followed and supported Aly.

This week, we will also publish some thoughts and expresses of love by those who knew Aly and worked directly with her.
