LINE DRIVE SOFTBALL: What’s your athletics background and how did you get to the point of leading the team/organization?
SCOTTY SMITH: I did not play college baseball. Instead, I chose the path of extreme sports, racing motocross. (My daughters also raced at a very young age till we started softball at age 4 (years old)) (I coached) them their whole careers and now in my 20th year coaching.
LD SOFTBALL: When did the team/program start and how/why did it come to be?
SS: Epic was established in 2020. I was a partner/owner of Gametime Stars (organization) and after my daughter graduated HS, I moved on to start Epic Fastpitch. Epic has seen amazing growth. In just four years, it has been a national contender since Day 1.
LD SOFTBALL: Where are you based? Where do your athletes come from?
SS: Epic is based out of Norman, OK. However, Epic does have athletes from seven different states and teams from five different states.
LD SOFTBALL: What was the purpose of creating the team?
SS: Over my many years of coaching softball I have come to love the game very much. It is something I’m very passionate about. It is a hobby of mine, but I also do this for the girls. I do not do this for my source of income. This is something I do for the kids. I enjoy the coaching, the traveling, helping the young athletes find their future homes in college and , of course, I love to WIN!
LD SOFTBALL: How many teams are there in the organization overall?
SS: 47.
LD SOFTBALL: What have been some of your successes in terms of winning or placing at events?
SS: 2024 (Results):
LD SOFTBALL: What makes the organization unique?
SS: We have an amazing indoor facility that is open only to Epic players, allowing us to train year round.
LD SOFTBALL: Has there been a key moment or defining experience in the team’s history?
SS: Just believing in the path!
LD SOFTBALL: What is your primary focus or goal with this team/organization?
SS: Continued development and growth for our young athletes!
LD SOFTBALL: What do you think are the strengths of the team/organization?
SS: The knowledge of the game, to teach and help the girls grow along with the knowledge and resources for their college recruiting desires.
LD SOFTBALL: If there is one thing you would say that separates you from other club programs, what would it be?
SS: To be a part of Epic means you are goal-driven and have high ambitions to play at that next level. While we are here to play the game, we are also here to produce the best athletes we possibly can and there is much more to that than just the fundamentals of the game itself. We don’t just grow their game, but help them grow into the best possible young adult they can be.
LD SOFTBALL: Was there a former coach, player or person in the organization from the past that has left a major impression on your team/organization and why?
SS: Mikayla Smith. Not only is she my daughter, but she is the hardest-working, most dedicated and determined kid I’ve ever met. Failing is not an option to her and when she trains her students, she teaches them the same work ethic. Mikayla played D1 at (North Texas).
