Mia Galella is excited about where her college softball career will take her after she had to redshirt as a freshman at Boston College this year due to rehab from arm surgery.

College Transfer Spotlight: Mia Galella Leaves Boston College & On the Market As A Prolific Power Hitter with Speed (June 3, 2026)

The NCAA D1 transfer portal officially opens next Monday, June 8, 2026, and if it’s like it was last year, more than 1,500 undergraduate players will be looking to find a new collegiate home.

Mia looks to play the outfield when she settles in to her future collegiate home.

One of those is Mia Galella, the promising standout power hitter formerly at Boston College who missed her freshman season this year because of an injury—a torn UCL on her right (throwing) arm—that necessitated surgery in June 2024.

It’s been a roller-coaster of a recovery ride over the last two years, but Mia is now ready to show the promise and potential folks have seen in her for years.

Eager for a chance to show what she can do, the East Coast standout will first compete in the Florida Gulf Coast League that starts on June 10, a week from today.

And she’s also looking for a new home to play collegiate ball… and for someone willing to take a chance on her high reward potential success.

Pre-College HOT 100 Talent

After her arm surgery two summers ago, Mia was able to rehab and recover to play her senior year of high school ball at Holy Cross (Dunmore, Pa.) High in 2025 where she had an explosive season.

In her Holy Cross High senior year, Mia was named the Pennsylvania 1A Player of the Year.

Her stat line included a batting average of .618 with an on-base percentage of .705, a strong slugging percentage of 1.265 and 42 hits and 28 RBIs in 23 games.

Mia led the Lady Crusaders to the 2025 District 2 Class A Championship where she smacked her 10th and final home run of the season in the league championship win for Holy Cross High.

For her tremendous senior campaign, the 2025 grad was named the Pennsylvania Class 1A State Player of the Year and was ranked in the Top 30 of her class in the Line Drive HOT

Mia had also compiled several years of strong club play on a Virginia Glory team coached by Suzy Willemssen, an NFCA Hall of Fame Coach who has won more than 1,300 games in her travel ball and high school career and won five high school state titles.

Hitting in the middle of the order for the Glory, Mia had a jaw-dropping .708 on-base percentage in her time with Coach Willemssen and really drew a lot of attention in a live batting practice when the Keystone State prodigy smashed a dozen straight rockets over a 200-foot fence before a crowd of astonished coaches.

Everything seemed to be going the athlete’s way and the future seemed very bright… but the teen athlete wasn’t totally out of the woods just yet.

More Changes Lead to Seeking a New Future

After her fantastic final year of prep ball, Mia’s arm began to trouble her again and she was forced to shut it down for the 2025 summer club season as well as last fall.

Ultimately, the power hitter had to have clean up surgery on December 30, 2025—the day before New Year’s Eve—to remove scar tissue.

The rehab from that surgery unfortunately forced the athlete to sit out the spring of this collegiate softball year at BC, but after months of fervent workouts, she is now back and ready to finally show what she can do after a long and admittedly impatient two years of mostly being in the dugout cheering her teammates on.

Mia also shared her perspective of her journey by blogging for Line Drive Media… her most recent, in March, was titled: “My Injury Recovery & Love for My Boston College Eagles Team!”

While recuperating, the Boston College head coach who recruited her, Amy Kvilhaug, retired from her position in May 2025, wrapping up a six-year tenure leading the ACC program.

The time not on the field has been filled with fervent workouts leading to personal bests.

With all the changes, Mia decided to enter the transfer portal to “get a fresh start.”

For any top softball program looking to pick up a very promising, but so far unproven, prospect, Mia should definitely be looked at—not just for her prodigious hitting talents but also for what she brings to the team as a positive dugout influence.

“Mia has endured multiple storms,” Coach Willemsen explains symbolically of the adversity her former Virginia Glory standout has had to endure, “but throughout it all has maintained a positive, resilient and  persevering outlook.”

“Also, during her numerous challenges,” the club coach continues, “Mia continued to be the biggest cheerleader for others.”

“Those things are what make her an attractive prospect to check out as she continues to work towards her dream of playing college softball. She is a hidden gem that could be the perfect match for a team needing an athlete with big bat and a big heart.”

Projecting What Mia Can Do With a New Opportunity

One of Mia’s biggest fans and supporters is the accomplished college coach who recruited her, Amy Kvilhaug.

Former Boston College Head Coach Amy Kvilhaug

The now retired coach—who stepped down in May of 2025 after winning 527 games in her illustrious D1 coaching career—is still involved in softball as she consults with families about the recruiting process and teaches private pitching lessons while studying to get a Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling, which she’ll obtain next year.

Kvilahaug shares her thoughts on what Mia can do now that she’s back and appears to be100 percent health-wise.

Prior to coming to Boston College, we projected Mia to be a big, powerful bat in our lineup. An added bonus was that she ran the bases pretty well, too.

“Defensively, we projected her at either first base or in the outfield.”

“She’s an unselfish team player with an unmatched work ethic and has the potential to really help a program.”

In Her Own Words… Mia’s Story & How She Longs to Be Back on the Field

Mia’s road hasn’t been easy, but she’s put her all into recovering, rehabbing and making her softball career a great one.

Here’s what she shared with Line Drive Media this week on what she’s looking to do in the future…

I medically redshirted this last season due to my second elbow surgery which took place on Dec. 30, 2025.

Dr. Christopher Ahmad, New York Yankees team surgeon did the surgery and my arm is now stronger than ever before.  My recovery was very strict and now I’ve been fully released to play the game I love so much.

I’ve worked very hard on my speed and explosiveness while down with injury at Boston College and caught bullpens all season which has made it so much easier for me to identify spins and velocity.

I will be entering the transfer portal on June 8th since I would like a fresh start with an entirely new chapter for me to write of my softball story.

Mia, in her Line Drive Media blog earlier this year, said “my rehab and recovery has made me mentally stronger than ever been before.”

I broke the Boston College softball squat record while I was recovering which was pretty cool but, more importantly while recovering from my injury this past season, it allowed me to spend a lot of time in the weight room, even more than I normally do which is a heck of a lot!

That is why I am now in the best physical condition I have ever been in.

The overcoming of all the adversity has made me so much stronger mentally and I believe I can now overcome anything that is out in front of me regardless of how difficult.

I have broken a few PRs since returning home from school. As of now, I’ve reached 19 mph and 3.2 (seconds) from home to first.

This is all due to my work ethic and how I am doing everything I can every day to improve my game.

I am back hitting the ball even further than before and have been hitting live while getting ready to go play in the Florida Gulf Coast League this summer.

This will allow me to get back to full game speed and, with outfield as my primary position, it will be so much fun to get back at it against high level collegiate competition.
