Workout Places & Spaces: The Indoor Facility at Crenshaw (Cartersville, Ga.) Run by Softball Family

The Facility at Crenshaw provides training for players of all ages and numerous travel ball programs.

Just three years ago, “The Facility at Crenshaw” opened its doors for the first time and what started as a place for their teams to practice has turned into an elite training facility for multiple sports.

Although their main focus is on softball, the athletic space also contains a half basketball court as well as strength training equipment. The Facility owners have also added a full size, outdoor softball field for their athletes to utilize as well.

Not only does The Facility offer sports training, but it is also a home to the Atlanta Vipers organization and often hold events for them including—most recently—hitting expert Rob Crews

Continues Coach Ken:

“We continuously look to bring experts to The Facility to share their knowledge with players in our community. Some of our past guests have included but not limited to Savana Sikes (Georgia), Lacey Fincher (Georgia), Jana Johns (Oklahoma), and Monica Abbott (Texas Longhorn strikeout record holder and career wins record holder as well as a two-time silver medalist for Team USA Silver).”

Most recently, the Facility at Crenshaw added a weekly live BP event.

“Karla has been giving lessons for years,” Ken explains, “but the biggest concern parents always bring to her is ‘My player hits great in lessons but struggles in tournaments.’”

Noted hitting instructor Rob Crews (back row, second from left) poses with a Vipers team at the Facility at Crenshaw.

In an effort to close the gap, they began offering live BP sessions at The Facility. Players have the opportunity to get as many at-bats in one hour as they would in two tournaments or more off of a variety of pitch speeds and movement.

Numerous elite athletes have worked with players at The Facility at Crenshaw including legendary softball pitcher Monica Abbott.

The sessions fill up within a couple of hours of being released with players of all ages coming in knowing there’s a “comfort” cage and a “struggle/challenge” cage. They must attempt bunts on each pitcher before getting a game-like at bat with an umpire calling balls and strikes.

“We usually have a machine cage and a virtual reality station as well,” Coach Ken says, “and it is amazing to witness the change for the players who have consistently signed up. It has gone from not having much contact, with it being the off season, to seeing more disciplined at bats with great pitch selection to many, many more hits!”

The coach and facility leader says the reps and practice at The Facility benefits individual player needs not just physically, but in other ways as well.

“Not only does live BP give them live reps to get comfortable in the box, we also heavily focus of the mental side of the game that tends to be overlooked in regular lessons and practices.”

“During our live BP sessions, we constantly ask players in certain situations: ‘What should you be thinking here? What kind of pitch would be best to hit/throw with this count’?”

The Crenshaws stress that The Facility is a safe place, a location for athletes to test their limits, fail without judgement, and see what they are capable of doing!”

“Point blank,” coach Ken concludes, “this just is a place to get better!!!
