The verbals continue to roll in and it likes like it won’t slow down anytime soon!
Recently, we shared the happy news that Avery Santos, a 2026 MIF/OF who plays for Team San Diego – DeBus is committed to Ave Maria University, an NAIA school in Southwestern Florida that plays in the Sun conference.
We asked Avery what led her to committing to the Gyrenes, which is a nickname for the U.S. Marines… here’s what she had to say:

My recruiting process was definitely unique, and at times a little stressful since I committed later in my senior year of high school.
My interest in Florida schools first started in 2024 when I traveled there for a travel ball tournament. After that trip, I began researching different schools throughout Florida and eventually came across Ave Maria University, a small school near Naples that immediately caught my attention.
I reached out to the head softball coach, Coach T (Trinity Medina), to ask about roster needs, availability, and interest in recruiting me. As we continued talking, I asked if I could meet her and the team the next time I traveled to Florida.
In September 2025, I was invited to join a practice with the Ave Maria University softball team, and that visit completely changed everything for me. The practice went really well, and I got a firsthand look at the team environment, the coaching styles, and the way the players interacted with one another.
The team welcomed me right away and made it easy for me to jump into their routine, which stood out to me more than anything else.
The same day, I toured campus and instantly felt like I belonged there; a feeling I hadn’t fully experienced at any other school I had visited.

After staying in touch with Coach T, I received my offer at the beginning of 2026. Even with other offers on the table, my decision wasn’t very difficult. I loved the people, the school, the faith aspect, and the softball program at Ave Maria, which led to my commitment shortly after.
Just before I announced my commitment, I had my official visit where I sat in on a class at Ave and ate lunch with the softball team. It was such a great experience because I got to see how people on campus interacted and got to experience the softball players off the field, where they were still just as welcoming and genuine.
I met so many amazing people and got a real feel for what attending the school would truly look like, and I’m so grateful for that experience.
My recruiting process may not have looked like everyone else’s, but it showed me that every athlete’s journey is different, and I truly believe I ended up exactly where I was meant to be. I’m so excited for this next chapter.
Go Gyrenes!
