Did You Know? May 10 Is World Baseball Softball Day… Here’s What That Means (May 1, 2026)

Happy May Day (May 1), everyone!

And now that we’re officially in the fifth month of the year, we can look ahead to the “next holiday,” at least for us softball fans: World Baseball Softball Day.

Now, we’re not encouraging you to skip school or take days off from work, but it is a fun day to appreciate the sport we love and how it’s impacting the world.

Here is the announcement issued this week by the WBSC or the World Baseball Softball Confederation, the governing body of the bat-and-ball sports internationally, along with what exactly the “Day” is all about…

*****

National Federations and athletes around the world are encouraged to participate in World Baseball Softball Day on 10 May.

With  World Baseball Softball Day being on10 May, the global baseball and softball community is entering a powerful new phase of the countdown — one led by the voices that define the game: The Athletes.

Your Voice. Your Story. Your Game.

From local fields to the road to the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, athletes are shaping the future of baseball and softball. They are not only competitors — they are leaders, role models and storytellers of a truly global sport.

As the countdown continues, athletes, para-athletes, coaches, officials, fans, refugees and grassroots communities around the world are invited to reflect, share and inspire. Whether on a local field or an international stage, every journey is part of the global story of baseball and softball.

To help spark that reflection, the campaign invites the community to answer some of the powerful questions:

  • What does World Baseball Softball Day mean to you personally?
  • Baseball and softball are played all over the world—what moment made you truly feel part of a global community?
  • What advice would you give to young athletes dreaming of reaching your level?
  • What does the Olympic dream mean to you personally?
  • What is your personal dream for this year—on or off the field?

These questions are more than prompts – they are an invitation to connect. Across cultures, disciplines and experiences, they highlight the shared passion that unites the global baseball and softball family.

By tagging @WBSC and using #BaseballSoftballDay #WBSD, your voice can be heard.

Watch: Voices of the Game

Across continents and disciplines, athletes are sharing what the sport means to them — the moments that changed their lives, the dreams that drive them, and the communities that support them.

A Movement Led by Athletes

As WBSC President Riccardo Fraccari said:

“It’s a day to celebrate our sport and all that we have achieved as one united team.”

With 10 days to go, this is more than a countdown — it’s a global movement!

Share your story. Join the relay. Lead the game.

What is World Baseball Softball Day?

World Baseball Softball Day made its historic debut on 10 May 2024, marking the 10th anniversary of the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC), following the successful merger of the International Baseball Federation and the International Softball Federation in 2014.

From its inception, the WBSC has tirelessly championed the global growth of Baseball/Softball, encouraging innovation, teamwork and international collaboration and to honor this impressive merger of international baseball and softball under one unified banner, the WBSC Executive Board declared 10 May as the official World Baseball Softball Day.

10th of May – World Baseball Softball Day

WBSC President Riccardo Fraccari

This date holds special significance as the day when the WBSC elected its first Executive Board in 2014, marking the beginning of a new chapter for Baseball/Softball.

President Fraccari emphasized:

“We stand as a single, unified and strong International Federation.”

“The 10th of May, the day the WBSC was founded in 2014, is a day for us to celebrate our unity and strength, along with our eight Confederations and 191 National Federations.”

To help celebrate the WBSC Anniversary on 10th of May, all WBSC National Federations and Members are encouraged to get involved and celebrate World Baseball Softball Day by posting their passion for Baseball/Softball on social media!

Get in the Game! How to get involved on World Baseball Softball Day

We invite all WBSC National Federations and Members to join us in celebrating World Baseball Softball Day on 10 May. A social media campaign will be launched for the event in order for the entire international Baseball/Softball community to be involved.

One of the key successes of the WBSC has been getting baseball and softball back into the Olympic Games.

A Celebration

Since the 2014 merger between the International Baseball Federation (IBAF) and the International Softball Federations (ISF), the WBSC has evolved into a global force driving the sport forward.

President Fraccari highlighted:

“We have established a strong foundation from which we can provide the best opportunities and the best future for our athletes and sport’s disciplines.”

Over the past decade, the journey in the Baseball/Softball community has been marked by achievements and challenges, all of which have contributed to our growth.

Notable successes include baseball’s and softball’s return to the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020, the establishment of the Premier12 as a premier international baseball event, and the expansion of the WBSC events portfolio.

The rebranding and professionalisation of the Softball World Cups, and the addition of two new categories—U-15 Women and U-23 Men—provide more opportunities for our athletes to represent their nations at the highest level.

World Baseball Softball Day not only honors past achievements, but also serves as a call to action for the sport’s future progression. By joining in the celebrations of World Baseball Softball Day, National Federations will not only commemorate our shared achievements but help lay the groundwork for an even brighter future.
