Florida’s Kenleigh Cahalan and Oregon’s Lyndsey Grein captured the Division I Louisville Slugger/NFCA Player and Wilson/NFCA Pitcher of the Week honors for contests played Feb. 17-23.
Cahalan hit .500 with two doubles, three home runs and 13 RBI leading the second-ranked Gators to a 5-0 weekend in Arizona. The junior third baseman matched a career best with four RBI at RV Grand Canyon before setting a new RBI mark with six against Iowa State. Slugging 1.286, Cahalan hit a home run in three straight contests, including her first collegiate grand slam against the host Lopes.
Grein tossed 18 shutout innings, keying No. 14 Oregon to a 5-0 showing at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. She went 4-0 with two wins in relief against then-No. 5 Tennessee and then-No. 22 Missouri. Against the Lady Vols, Grein held them hitless and struck out five over the final 3.1 innings in a 1-0 eight-inning victory. In 4.2 innings of relief versus Mizzou, Grein fanned eight and surrendered one hit. She finished the weekend, allowing just five hits, striking out 24 and holding her opposition to .088 batting average.
The awards are voted on by the NFCA Division I Top 25 Poll Committee, which features one member head coach from each of the NCAA’s 31 conferences.
