Event Recap: 18U, 16U, 14U, 12U & 10U Champs Crowned at Phil Mumma Memorial Tournament (Sept. 29, 2024)

The Phil Mumma Memorial Tournament was held Sept. 28-29 in NorCal:

18U: LADY MAGIC-WALLING VS. CALIFORNIA GRAPETTES-MERRIDA

Lady Magic-Walling remained undefeated and finished as the 18U co-champions with California Grapettes-Merrida at the Phil Mumma Memorial Tournament on Sunday at Foskett Field in Lincoln, CA.

Lady Magic and Cal Grapettes decided not to play the championship game and split the prize money, pocketing about $2,100 each. The winner would have received a paid entry to PGF Nationals.

“We played Merrida in (the Organizational Challenge two weeks ago in) Salinas,” Lady Magic coach Steve Walling said, “so I think we could have won, but we just decided to be co-champions. It was a long day.”

Lady Magic is looking strong so far this fall, winning the organizational challenge, finishing as co-champions at the Phil Mumma Tournament and getting off to a 12-0 start.

Notre Dame-committed 2025 C/3B Hayden Kyne (.688 AVG, 3 HRs), Cal-committed 2025 OF Sophia Everett (.500 AVG), Arizona State-committed 2025 IF Jazmarie Roberts (.429 AVG, 3 doubles, 1 HR), Maryland-committed 2025 RHP/1B Elisea Wiegand (.417 AVG, 2 HRs), Iowa-committed 2025 RHP Carly Brewer (3-0, 2.65 ERA) and Purdue-committed 2026 RHP Roxy Sardo (2-0, 0.50 ERA) were Lady Magic’s leaders for the tournament.

16U: SORCERER-TORRES/KHALATYAN 2, UNITY-RICKS/JOHNSON 1

Sorcerer-Torres/Khalatyan pulled out a 2-1 victory over Unity-Ricks/Johnson in the 16U championship game of the Phil Mumma Memorial Tournament on Sunday at Foskett Field in Lincoln, CA,

2027 P Alanys “Lano” Robertson allowed six hits, one run and struck out six in 6.0 innings to record the win for Sorcerer in the finals.

2027 CF Madelyn Johnston went 2 for 3 with an RBI, 2027 RF Alicya Robertson went 2 for 2 with a run and an RBI and 2027 SS Suzy Khalatyan went 2 for 3 with two doubles for Sorcerer.

Alicya Robertson (.667 AVG, .688 OBP, 4 runs, 4 RBIs, 2 SBs), Johnston (.550 AVG, 2 doubles, 5 RBIs, 7 runs, 8 SBs), Khalatyan (.500 AVG, .611 OBP, 3 doubles, 4 RBIs, 6 runs, 4 SBs), Alanys “Lano” Robertson (.467 AVG, .526 OBP, .800 SLG, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 5 RBIs, 5 runs, 0.84 ERA, 17 Ks, 16 IP) and 2028 C Brea Poindexter (.467 AVG, .529 OBP, 2 doubles, 3 RBIs, 2 runs, threw out 4 of 8) were the leaders for Sorcerer for the tournament.

14U: LADY MAGIC MUNOZ-ASIA 14, LTG LIONS 2029-BUCK 2

Lady Magic Munoz-Asia went 7-1 on the weekend, beating LTG Lions 2029-Buck, 14-2, in the 14U final to win the Phil Mumma Memorial Tournament on Sunday at Legacy Sports Complex in Tracy, CA.

The pitching staff, consisting of 2028 Rylie Bumgarner, 2029 Katharine Popovski, 2028 Makinley Hislop and 2028 Brooklyn Ainsworth, were lights out all weekend, posting a combined ERA of 0.73. All four pitchers had double digit strikeouts. The staff was led by Bumgarner with 26 strikeouts in 23 innings and Popovski with 24 strikeouts and only two walks.

Offensively, the team scored 120 runs in eight games and were led by 2028 1B/C Ella Dossey, who had a team leading batting average of .696, including four doubles, two triples, one home run and 12 RBIs.

Another offensive leader was 2029 MIF Kendrick Jobe, who hit .611 on the weekend with four triples and nine stolen bases. 2028 C/1B Madeline Bittman led the team with 16 RBIs and 2029 OF Peyton Williams led the team with three home runs.

12U: LADY MAGIC 2012-BIGLEY 8, UNIVERSAL 2012-KELLY/HORTON 2

The Lady Magic organization continued to show strength in all age groups as Lady Magic 2012-Bigley took down Universal 2012-Kelly/Horton, 8-2, in the 12U championship game of the Phil Mumma Memorial Tournament on Sunday at Arnaiz Field in Stockton, CA.

2030 P Isla Broussard allowed five hits and two runs while striking out nine in 5.0 innings to get the win for the Lady Magic in the finals.

2030 LF Ellie Liu drove in four runs and 2030 2B Kendall Renshaw, 2030 1B Abigail Benzler and 2030 C Kylee Cunningham had two hits apiece to lead the Lady Magic’s offense. 2030 CF Kylee Dean, the leadoff hitter, also played a big role for Lady Magic.

“The girls have high in-game IQ, accept roles, understand team expectations and execute situational softball,” Lady Magic coach Ryan Bigley said. “This weekend is another brick in building a foundation towards the greater goal. The Lady Magic Org is built on achieving a national competitiveness.”

10U: CORONA ANGELS-ALVARADO 10, AASA-SANSAVER 8

Corona Angels-Alvarado made some great strides with its 10-8 win over AASA-Sansaver in the 10U championship game of the Phil Mumma Memorial Tournament on Sunday at Arnaiz Stadium in Stockton, CA.

“Winning this tournament really showed this team’s resiliency as we lost a tough game in the championship of our previous PGF tournament,” Corona Angels coach Shane Alvarado said. “They learned from that and it motivated them to work harder. These girls continue to grow and develop and I am very proud of what they have accomplished. We played some tough competition this weekend and have a great deal of respect for AASA-Sansaver, great coaches and group of players.”

2032 P Logan Alvarado got the win in the finals with 4.2 innings pitched and three Ks. 2032 SS Madison Hagen played solid defense and had three hits, 2032 OF/P Emma Wadkins had three hits and two RBIs, 2032 IF Karis Bachman had two hits and 2032 3B Harper Felkins had two hits and two RBIs in the finals.

For the tournament, Hagen (.692 AVG, 3 doubles), 2032 C Carlie Chaney (.462 AVG, 2 doubles, solid catching), Felkins (.417 AVG) and Bachman (.416 AVG, 2 doubles) were the leaders for the Corona Angels.
