PGF Nationals: Tuesday Results (& The Rookie Mistake I Made)
Tuesday at PGF Nationals continued the bracket play and even saw some teams see their weeks come to an end with the double elimination format.
Below are the results from each of the 18U & 16U Premier & Platinum divisions with some of my thoughts… and a mistake I made after one game I should’ve known better.

The Game of the Day had to be the Bill Conroy-led Beverly Bandits 18U team versus the Unity, coached by former Michigan All-American pitcher Megan Betsa.
Betsa played travel ball for Conroy so there was the mentor/mentee aspect, but also there was some sniping off the field which made it to the internet and caused some less than pleasant feelings between the teams.
Not surprisingly, the small stands at the Huntington Beach Sports Complex were filled and not just with fans of both teams—players and coaches of other teams were there to watch as were coaches from Big Ten, SEC and ACC programs.
The story of the game came down to the great pitching of 2024 grad Ella Harrison who is headed to Rutgers. Mixing her pitches up nicely, she got out of an early jam when a Unity runner reached third base with two outs, but Harrison struck out the next hitter, one of seven K’s she’d have for the game.
The Bandits would use their very effective small ball game to put up three runs in the bottom of the 4th inning and would go on to win 6-1.
“Ella’s pitching was the difference,” agreed Conroy after the win, “but everybody stepped up when they had to. It was a total team win.”
The Bandits head man agreed that “there was a lot of attention on this game, but my kids didn’t say anything and won’t to fuel the other team.”
Rookie Mistake
OK, this is where I (Brentt Eads) screwed up.
I asked Coach Conroy if I could interview his standout pitcher after the game and he said yes. Ella was wonderfully sweet and accommodating and I could tell she’s articulate and a good interview…
… but I put her in an awkward position—a rookie mistake—when I had her step just a few feet from her team for an interview. Think the other Bandits’ players didn’t notice?
I made sure the background was clear as I asked Ella stand back to the fence with the field in the background BUT I didn’t have her far enough from her team and, well, this happened:
Fortunately, Ella was very graceful and a good sport about it and you could tell her teammates love her.
But, geez, I know better than to interview a kid just feet from her teammates! Sorry, Ella, but thank you for being so wonderful about it all!
On Wednesday, at 5 pm PST, the Bandits play another team loaded with great talent, especially offensively—the Washington Ladyhawks Gold Miller/Simpson powerhouse.
That will be a good candidate to be Game of the Day as well.

Another team to watch out for in the 18U Premier Bracket is the Tennessee Mojo – Ramsey/Fisher team which won its first bracket game by a score of 14-1 and moved to 4-0 on the week at PGF Nationals.
This team is loaded with talent and if you need proof, here’s the stat lines of players both offensively and pitching-wise:
