And here we go... Friday got us down to the two teams competing in the losers' bracket to face the winners' bracket standout on Saturday for all the marbles (meaning a Georgia high school softball state championship!).

The 2026 Georgia high school softball season officially began on August 1 and culminates on Saturday with the playoffs wrapping up at the South Commons Softball Complex in Columbus, Ga.

Line Drive Media contributor Steve Hickey has tracked the prep fastpitch journey in the Peach State for the seven public divisions (1A through 7A) and the one private division and is onsite in Columbus with reports from each of the four day’s of action.

Below is his report from Wednesday’s Day 1 action… first, though are his reports from the action leading up to this championship week:

Day 3 Summary

Sunrise peaked over the cool banks of the Chattahoochee River and splashed the fields across South Commons Park for Day 3 of the Georgia High School Association Softball tournament.

Here we go! The Georgia high school softball championships conclude this week in Columbus, Ga. and we’ll have reports of all the title games!

Friday is moving day, meaning 24 more teams will be headed home after the day’s competition while eight will punch their ticket directly into the championship game through the winner’s bracket and 16 will live to fight again tomorrow through the losers’ bracket.

Pressure is the name of the game, and urgency is how you play it.  If you don’t handle it, pressure bursts pipes.

South Commons isn’t a wine and cheese affair; it’s an arena of gladiators, where only the brave step into the arena, and—when your gladiator gets the job done—it’s time to howl to the heavens.

There is an interesting one upmanship from one field to the next, vying for the conch of attention on the field.  There is nothing good coming from a quiet dugout or a quiet field.

Even the winning team, if it is quiet, are waiting to be upset…. come and get them.

There basically were three sets of games today:

  • the early slots that went off at 11 am and 12:30 pm with slots that were loser bracket play-in games across all classifications,
  • the midafternoon slots that were the winner bracket showdowns,
  • and the evening slots that were the elimination games from the first slot’s winners.

Everything feeds into Championship Day tomorrow.

With no weather problems this year, the only scheduling difficulty was the number of extra-inning games, which there were plenty.

All in all, there was unlimited action and lots of anticipated matchups even though the crowds were maybe a bit thinner today with fewer college coaches in attendance, but the ones that were in person had plenty of energy and cowbells and vuvuzelas to spare (I will hear those things in my sleep for a long, long time).

3 Things I Learned Today

How is your counterpunch?

Championship teams get hit with plenty of body shots and bad things do happen to good people, but resilient and gritty teams punch back.

Their response is a defining part of the week’s tournament.

The better question is how many do ya got in ya? And what are you going to do with it?

And, perhaps most important of all, when you get hit, do you crumble… or do you rumble.

Sometimes we focus on home runs or fielding errors as keys to the game. Those are going to happen, and everyone is going to talk about them as keys to the game.

However, at this stage of the tournament, the real silent killer is missed opportunities.

If there are runners left on base, can you capitalize? Gotta go get those ducks on the pond when you can.

Hartley Staton, seen here pitching earlier this year.

Then, there are those who elevate their game when the stakes are the highest.

One prime example: Trion High, which has a special pitcher in Hartley Staton who led her team to a pair of wins on Wednesday and Thursday without surrendering a run.

On Friday, she led her team to a 12-inning win, throwing 204 pitches, and striking out 25.

That may be the most in Columbus since George Walton’s Taylor Tinsley struck out 27 in 2021.

The Bulldogs are through to Saturday’s championship game, and Hartley has an early nod for her classification’s MVP

Other results from across the state:

Player of the Year Candidate – Nola Tylke and Harrison will not be denied another comeback win and now they wait in the 7A championship game against the TBA losers’ bracket winner.
7A
  • • In the early games, North Paulding defeated Brookwood 3-2, and Buford defeated Lambert 7-1.
  • In the mid-afternoon winner’s bracket showdown, Harrison defeated Northgate 6-5. Northgate carried a 5-1 lead into the 5th inning, and Northgate chose to walk Nola Tylke to load the bases. Brooke Belair protected her and hit a bases clearing double, and the Hoyas held on to win the game.
  • Harrison moves forward to Saturday’s championship game.
  • n the evening, loser’s bracket, Buford defeated North Paulding 7-6. Buford will play Northgate at 10 am tomorrow for the right to play Harrison.
    • So, in 7A it will be Harrison vs. the winner of Buford/Northgate

Creekview has a bowling ball celebration after Lili Beal’s solo home run to put the Grizzlies up 2-0 over Lassiter
6A
  • In the early slot, South Effingham defeated Lee County 3-0 and Houston defeated Veterans 10-7.
  • In the mid-afternoon, winner’s bracket game, Creekview spit-shined the look of destiny. Against a very talented Lassiter, Willa Porterfield threw a three-hitter and won 2-0. Lili Beal hit another homer un and looks like a strong candidate of Player of the Tournament for this classification.
  • In the evening loser’s bracket, South Effingham sent Houston home, 10-2.
    • In 6A, then, South Effingham will play Lassiter for the right to play Creekview in the championship game.

*****

5A
  • In the early slot, in the loser’s bracket, Central defeated North Oconee 4-1, and Harris County defeated Wayne County 6-5.
  • In the mid-afternoon winner’s bracket game, Jefferson defeated Cartersville 8-2. This game was tied at 2-2 going into the final frame, and the pipes just busted for the Lady Canes. After prevailing their first two games with walk off heroics, it finally caught up to them.
  • Jefferson moves directly into the championship game tomorrow.
  • In the evening finale, the loser’s bracket saw Central defeated Harris County 7-3.
    • In 5A, Central will now play Cartersville for the right to play Jefferson.

*****

4A
  • In the early slot, Heritage won over Cherokee Bluff in nine innings, and a very controversial ending. In the top of the 9th, with a runner on 3rd and one out, Cherokee Bluff hit a sacrifice fly to right field. The play at the plate was called safe; however, it was overturned as the runner was called for leaving early for an inning-ending double play. Molly Corvin doubled in the bottom of the inning to lift the defending champions 3-2. Long County had to rally at the top of the 7th, down 3-1 to Harlem with some uncharacteristic throwing errors and seeing eye singles. Long won 5-3.
  • In the mid-afternoon slot, North Hall won in run-rule fashion by a score of 13-5 over West Laurens. North Hall will await in the championship game tomorrow for West Laurens or… in the loser’s bracket finale Friday evening, Heritage continued to work their way back, defeating Long County 9-0.
    • Heritage will play West Laurens tomorrow morning for the right to play North Hall.

*****

3A
  • In the early slot, Appling defeated Pike 5-3, and Morgan County defeated Worth County 3-0.
  • In the mid-afternoon slot, defending champion Sonoraville continued their title defense defeating Brantley County 5-3.
  • In the evening slot, Appling defeated Morgan County 8-3.
    • Appling will battle No. 7 Brantley County in a showdown for the right to play Sonoraville in the championship game.

*****

Oops, Gordon Lee is doing it again, looking to win title No. 13!
2A
  • In the early slot, in the loser’s bracket, Mt Zion defeated Bacon 8-6 and Vidalia defeated Banks 5-0.
  • In the mid-afternoon slot, 12-time state champion, Gordon Lee defeated Jeff Davis 10-0. Coach Dana Mulls is looking straight at title No. 13, which waiting in the championship game tomorrow.
    • In the evening finale, Vidalia defeated Mt Zion 8-5 so Vidalia will play Jeff Davis for a shot at Gordon Lee.

*****

1A
  • In the early games, in the loser’s bracket, ECI beat Bowden 10-0 and Lanier County defeated Irwin 5-0.
  • In the mid-afternoon winner’s showdown, Trion prevailed in a 12-inning thriller behind the arm of Hartley Staton in what is likely the tournament’s most dominant pitching display over three games allowing Trion to advance to Saturday’s championship game.
  • In the evening loser’s bracket finale, ECI defeated defending champion Lanier County, 4-0.
    • ECI will therefor play Wheeler tomorrow for a shot at Trion.

*****

Private
  • In the early slot, Pace was down throughout and staged a furious rally late and beat Providence Christian with a walk off two-run home run by Bodhi Venturi. On Field 3, Prince Avenue fell behind early but found its pulse when 2028 Finley Thomas hit a grand slam in the second inning to get them going. She came up later and hit another two-run homer, and the Wolverines defeated North Cobb Christian 12-9. Both homers were come-from-behind, go-ahead shots. Clutch.
  • In the midafternoon winners’ bracket, Hebron battled Mount Paran to a scoreless game through four innings and took a 2-0 lead into the 6th inning. Mount Paran’s pitcher Sophia Blane helped her cause by crushing a three-run homerun in the 6th, and it was too much and too late for Hebron to respond. Mount Paran won 5-2 and advances straight into the championship game tomorrow while awaiting the winner of Hebron and Prince Avenue.
  • Prince Avenue and Pace finished the day in the loser’s bracket, late Friday night. Prince’s vast industrial offensive complex was too much for Pace, and they scored in every inning but one, and won 15-6.
    • Prince plays Hebron in a rematch for the right to play Mount Paran.

Steve’s Take

Another great day of ball on Thursday.

It’s official, the chalk is out the window and it is chaos.

Amazingly, only 1A top seed has survived unscathed thus far and the only No. 2 seeds that have survived are 7A’s Harrison, 5A’s Cartersville (double barely), and 4A’s West Laurens.

It’s a knife fight, and everyone has brought composite bats.  Rumors of a champion’s demise are often overstated and going into the loser’s bracket sometimes just pisses them off.

Championship pedigrees are hard to make, harder to replicate, and even harder to extinguish but don’t count out Buford just yet.

After Friday’s action, two more teams from each classification will be done, meaning 32 teams will face the cold reality that their seasons are over.

At this point, everyone is playing desperately for one more day in the sun, one more time onto the field with their neighborhood friends and one more time seeking the honor of wearing their school’s jersey.

It is an incredible theater for these last stories to be told.
