Long-time Georgia High School Association (GHSA) leader Ernie Yarbrough passed away on Saturday, October 17.  The GHSA, based in Thomaston, Georgia, oversees athletics, academic competitions, and fine arts programs for 450 high schools in the Peach State.

The administrator was well known not just for his deep high school involvement with softball, but also nationally with his leadership with USA Softball.

Ernie began working with the GHSA in 1992 as a rules interpreter and served the association in several roles, including Coordinator of Officiating and Assistant Executive Director.

He retired from day-to-day duties with the GHSA in 2024 but remained on staff part-time, continuing to share his experience and support the association.

The well-respected leader also was a board member on the Atlanta Vipers and Georgia Power travel clubs, and his influence and outreach touched every corner of softball in Georgia.

Line Drive Media correspondent Steve Hickey was fortunate to interview Ernie and GHSA Associate Director Merri Sherman on September 25th, and, today, he reached out to Merri to express for himself and Line Drive Media “our deepest sympathies.”

She responded:

“My heart is so heavy. Ernie was so much more than a mentor and a friend; he was one of my biggest cheerleaders, always encouraging me, believing in me, and pushing me for over 23 years.”

“I’m incredibly grateful for the wisdom, friendship, and memories,” she continued.

“People like Ernie leave a lasting mark on your heart and your life, and I will forever be thankful that our paths crossed.  What a tremendous legacy he leaves behind, and I won’t let it be forgotten.”

Steve says:

“Perhaps Ernie’s greatest gift to us is the GHSA softball finals in Columbus that begins next week.  We will take extra looks at his lasting legacy while we report from South Commons.”

“His was a life well lived.  Ernie: we are sad because you are gone, but we are also blessed to have had you for the time we did.”

“Godspeed… you have been a faithful servant.  Thank you.”
