Recruiting Spotlight: 10 Questions with Utah-Bound Nia Talataina, Ranked No. 12 in the Line Drive Media 2028 HOT 100 (Oct. 8, 2026)

Nia Talataina is an outstanding infielder in the Class of 2028 who we’ve had in the HOT 100 rankings three years in a row (and all three times in the Top 20 of her class!).

Her successes have shown why she’s considered an elite player, including having helped Brian Tidd’s Athletics Mercado team to the PGF 14U Nationals Championship in August of 2025.

In 2025, Nia was named to the Line Drive Media 14U All-Summer team after she smacked 11 home runs with 51 RBIs and a .455 batting average, a .579 on-base percentage and a 1.534 OPS.

The winning continued this summer as Nia and her Athletics Mercado – Hovermale/Tidd 16U captured the 16U title at the 2026 Triple Crown Brashear Summer Invitational in Southern California the weekend of June 13-14.

When the Line Drive Media 2028 HOT 100 was released last month, the athlete from San Diego was ranked No. 12… here’s how her bio read:

T-12—Nia Talataina, IF, Athletics Mercado – Tidd/Iwai
Technically, her full first name is “Alofania,” but all in the softball community know her as “Nia.” Athletics Mercado head coach And Iwai notes: “Nia is an amazing athlete with the clutch gene and has come through over the years in big moments.” That goes back to 2024 when she was a starting player on the Athletics Mercado – Tidd/Iwai team that won the PGF Nationals at the 14U age division. This spring, she was named 2nd Team All-CIF San Diego Section at Cathedral Catholic High after she batted .455 with a .517 on-base percentage in 26 games for the Dons. She also had eight home runs and 20 RBIs. Nia also plays basketball.

Having a front row seat to the current junior’s progress has been Coach Tidd, who told Line Drive Media on Wednesday:

“Nia has been with me for the past three season and is one of the  best leaders that I have had. She plays the game the right way, holds herself and teammates to a very high standard.”

“She leads by example with accountability,” Coach Tidd adds, “and not too many athletes can play all four infield positions, plus she has consistently been one of our top hitters. We love Nia dearly as well as her great family.”

Recently, the standout 2028 athlete committed to the University of Utah on her campus trip to the Big 12 school located in Salt Lake City.

We asked Nia to tell us about her recruiting process and what made her feel that being a Utah Ute is where it’s at for her; here’s what she had to say…

*****

Nia with her parents on her official visit to the Utah where she would commit before returning home to San Diego.
What were the circumstances to your committing to the University of Utah?

Utah invited my family and I on a weekend campus visit.  My mom, dad, and youngest sister were all able to go with me.

Before we left Utah, we had breakfast at a French bakery with all of the coaches, my dad, mom, and sister, Lelalelei. During our conversation with Coach Hogue, I let her know that I knew the University of Utah was the place for me. I told her I wanted to be a Ute!

My other siblings, Sinalei, Toalei, and Leimoana, found out over the phone after finishing their own practices—because in our family, someone is always at a practice or a game!

*****

What was the deciding factor that made you realize this is where you wanted to go?

When I visited Utah, it immediately felt like a home away from home. The coaches and staff were genuine and showed how much they cared about me and my family. I also loved the team chemistry—the girls truly felt like sisters and made me feel welcome from the start.

Both of my parents have siblings and endless relatives in Utah, having so much family nearby was another big reason Utah felt right. Knowing I’ll have a village there supporting me, even when my parents and siblings can’t make it, means so much.

Utah also offers great academic opportunities that will allow me to explore my interests and prepare for my future.

Overall, I could see myself growing, competing, and becoming the best version of myself at Utah, both on and off the field.

*****

Was there an “aha” moment when it hit you and helped finalize your decision?

The “aha” moment for me was watching the culture of the team and coaching staff.

The team was incredibly connected and welcoming, making me feel like I could fit right in. Watching them practice and spending time with the players showed me how supportive they are of one another and made me want to be part of that environment.

The coaches were also a major part of my decision. They took the time to get to know me, my family, and my style of play, showing that they genuinely care about their athletes as people, not just players.

I loved learning about their coaching styles and how they challenge athletes to grow and compete at their highest level. All of these experiences made Utah feel like the place where I wanted to be.

Nia Talataina has helped her Athletics Mercado teams win multiple tournaments including the PGF National Championship.
Did the coaches tell you how they first found out about you and what did they say they like about your game enough to offer you?

The coaches told me they had been watching me for the past couple of years. They really liked my versatility and the fact that I can play multiple positions, along with my athletic ability.

Most importantly, they noticed the kind of teammate I am. My energy on and off the field and the way I approach everything I do were big things that stood out to them.

They also mentioned my leadership and how I naturally take on that role within a team.

I think all of those qualities played a big part in Utah seeing me as someone who would be a good fit for their program.

*****

Did you take other campus visits?

I had the opportunity to visit San Diego State University and could have visited a few other schools, but as soon as I visited the University of Utah, I knew I had found my home.

After that visit, I felt confident in my decision and knew Utah was where I wanted to be, so I decided to close my recruitment.

*****

Not a welcome sight for opposing pitchers in San Diego who had to face Nia as a sophomore last spring when she hit eight home runs and batted .455 for Cathedral Catholic High.
In your club softball career, you’ve accomplished a lot of great things! What are you most proud of?

In club softball, one of my proudest career moments was winning the Patriot Games, Colorado Sparkler, and PGF National Championship all in the same summer with Athletic Mercado – Tidd.

Not only were we able to accomplish that, but we were also the first team ever to win all three tournaments in one summer, which made it even more special.

*****

What about in high school?

In high school, one of my most memorable moments was getting to play alongside my older sister, Sinalei, during her senior year.

Sinalei is now a sophomore first baseman at the University of Arizona.

I played shortstop while she played third base, and being able to share the field with her and experience that special year together is something I will always cherish.

I can’t wait to play against her in the Big 12!

*****

Where will you and your club team be playing this fall?

My team and I will be competing in several tournaments this fall, including the PGF October Showcase, TCS Fireworks Sparkler NIT, the PGF Ultimate Challenge, Scenic City Top 25, TCS Players Classic, and Don Battle.

*****

Do you know what you want to study in college?

I’m interested in studying something in the business field and exploring different opportunities within that area.

*****

What’s something unusual or different about you most people don’t know?

Something people may not know about me is that I love staying active and keeping myself busy. I’m always looking for something new to do, whether it’s baking, exploring new things, or solving problems.

I especially enjoy doing escape rooms and singing karaoke with my friends!
